Here you can see the animation drawings by Boris Dezhkin and theirs clean-up versions. We thought that clean-up was done by Sergey Marakasov but Sasha Dorogov corrected us. This is work by Erick Treskin! Anyway this is a pretty good assistant job, isn't it?

Boris Dezhkin. Part 1

Again more historical than creative post. One of the most famous and great Russian animators was Boris Dezhkin. He was the true follower of Disney animation. Though many critics blame him for that loyalty to Disney he was just proud nevertheless. It must be said that Walt Disney saw works of Boris (THE UNUSUAL MATCH which recieved many international awards for example) and highly appreciated it. In fact he even invited Boris to work for the mouse house. Certainly the Soviet system could not tolerate this.

Boris lost one of his eyes during the World War II and still has remained an incredible good animator (here I can't not remember Michael Gagne who repeated this feat).

These are the Boris Dezhkin 's rough character design drawings done in latter half of 1950th.

By the way there is the character of Buratino (Soviet version of Pinocchio) on the first two drawings.
And this one is the key of animation sequence for A MIRACLE MAKER (1957). Boris has animated the weed plants.

NU, POGODI! Part 3.

Today we put online some cels from NU, POGODI! Hope you will like them!
The first one is from first part of series. It was done in 1969. The others are from later releases.

It is very interesting to note that these two below are from scenes which was animated by Sasha Dorogov. This wonderful Russian animator later worked for Disney and did some animation in POCAHONTAS, MULAN, LILO AND STITCH and in many others Disney's animated features. Who knows? Maybe someone from guests of Russian Insider worked with him and knows him.

We are continue to put online art material for most known Soviet cartoons NU, POGODI! ("Ну, погоди!").
Here you can see the photo of permanent director of all original episodes of NU, POGODI! Vyacheslav Kotenochkin and his son Alexey Kotenochkin. Alexey has become the animation director also and recently he did two new episodes of NU, POGODI!

And here there are another drawings done for 8th part, which was produced in 1974. Please notice that the same artist did all clean up drawings.
Valery Ugarov (he become famous animation director later) did animation for this scene, the clean up is by Sergey Marakasov.

NU, POGODI!

Outside of any doubts the most known and loveable cartoons in Soviet Union was the NU POGODI! (Which one may translate as the WELL, BE CAUTIOUS!) series. The NU POGODI! cartoons were made every year since 1969 to 1986, one short per year on the average (there were two cartoons in 1971 and in 1973). And every new cartoon was a big holiday for all Soviet children. Obviously that the most close Western analogue to NU POGODI was a TOM AND JERRY cartoons. Many people think that NU POGODI is the imitation of TOM AND JERRY but actually even the permanent director of NU POGODI Vyacheslav Kotenochkin did not see the MGM cartoons when began work on own series.
Today we begin to put online some art material done for NU POGODI. You will see the clean up drawings, cels and photo. Hope you will like it. And for us it is a history.

Prince Vladimir. Concept Art 11

Back to our most important recent animated feature. PRINCE VLADIMIR is in theaters for three weeks already and it grossed more than $4,7 millions in Russia. It is become clear that the final grosses will be about six millions. Ok, considering that PRINCE VLADIMIR's budget is about $5 millions, these results are not the outstanding. Still it is a success certainly. The hand drawn animation is alive in Russia! By the way a new hand drawn animated feature will be released in Russia tomorrow. This film which loosely based on Russian folklore has a very complex title DOBRYNYA NIKITICH AND ZMEY GORYNYCH. Unlike PRINCE VLADIMIR it is a comedy just like SHREK. Here you can see the poster.

And we glad to continue to put online Grigory Lozinsky's concept art for PRINCE VLADIMIR. These are last ones for a while (please do not forget that production of the second chapter of the dilogy is just started).

THE CHILDHOOD OF RATIBOR. Part 1

As you probably already know, the new Russian animated feature PRINCE VLADIMIR (about which we told so much here) has been released. And it become the most successful hand drawn animated film in modern Russia within just a few days of distribution. It grossed more than $2 million on the first four days of release on 390 screens (you see there were about 14700 screens in Soviet Union but right now there are very few fully working theaters in Russia). Anyway it goes here on one level with the most successful computer films such as MADAGASCAR. It seems that PRINCE VLADIMIR should make at least $5 million and it is great for a non-Hollywood film. We'll see.

And today we want to recall another Russian animated film (though not full-length). Its title is THE CHILDHOOD OF RATIBOR (1973). Just like PRINCE VLADIMIR it is devoted to very drastic times in Russian history but it feature very stylish graphic approach instead of realistic look of PRINCE VLADIMIR. By the way it was directed by Roman Davydov who was a director of Soviet version of JUNGLE BOOK (please see below).
So here you can see some production drawings done for THE CHILDHOOD OF RATIBOR. Sorry for quality - time has not spared these drawings.

Hi to all!
Today we got something special for you. This post is devoted to the remarkable Russian cartoon MARTINKO (1987) which was written and directed by Eduard Nazarov. It is the classic now and Mr.Nazarov become one of the most dear and favorite modern directors in Russia. The cartoon is available on DVD edition of Masters of Russian Animation 4 and it is possible to download it in MOV format from here for the purpose of preview :-). But we must warn you. The English subtitles are not very good and sadly do not transfer all colors of the Old Russian speech.
So this is the art work for MARTINKO and all these drawings were done by Eduard Nazarov himself.

We got some news about PRINCE VLADIMIR. It was said that Buena Vista International has shown interest to this Russian national animated project. So there is a good chance to see it abroad. Anyway the special screenings will take place in many countries of East Europe and at most famous animation festivals.

MOWGLI. Production art

About two months ago we did the couple of posts which were devoted to Russian version of Kipling's JUNGLE BOOK. Today we have a great opportunity to show some art work done for this Soyuzmultfim’s animation almost 40 years ago. We’ll try to publish all stuff in the ordered view. It is necessary to say that some of the greatest Soviet animators worked on that project but even their talents were insufficiently good for director Roman Davydov. He was so exacting that finally he personally animated pretty much footage. Here you can see some of his rough drawings.

The clean up artists did a marvelous work. These examples show how rough director’s drawings (here he acted as animator) were transferred to the film. This is the Sergey Marakasov’s clean up work most likely.

And here you can see the same drawings compared to the frames from finished film.

All art material was presented by Vladimir Nikitin. Within next few days we’ll show some rough animation’s drawings of adult Mowgli and high resolution scans of the production cels.

Hi to all!

In this age of computerized and remote-controlled video art, my conscious embrace of the “old ways of doing things” in no way negates the positive achievements gained by modern visual art.

In my professional capacity as an animator, I create animation art for the Internet media. This process of editing/creating computerized animation has revealed to me both the positive as well as the negative sides of the computerized technologies used by artists when creating their art.

The multiplicity of versions during the creative process, and the absence of a truly final product made of concrete materials, awakened in me a desire to ‘return’ to the traditional and more tangible elements – paper, pen and ink.

Concentrated and connected work gives a reciprocal affinity between brain-eye-hand-pen that enables one to experience at the molecular level the resistance of the paper, the quantity and density of the color, and the calculated movement that allows you to arrive at the desired result; in addition, the old methods and motifs, and even the compositions of the old artists themselves, which relate closely to the modern paradoxical views on art, politics and life itself, richly seasoned with black humor – all this is what provides the basis upon which to view my work, as something unique and “unrecyclable”.

The singularity of each line, each dot on paper, and the conscious refusal to mechanically reproduce, these are the elements that signify and represent each work, giving each one its own original character.

While Grigory Lozinsky is not ready to share his new art works on the pages of his own blog, we shall continue to acquaint you with concept art of PRINCE VLADIMIR.
The careful research and study of historic epoch were a big deal on the preproduction phase. For example, certainly artists should not draw the products that originally were delivered from America since Europeans knew nothing about America at that time. So there should not be any potato, tomatoes, corn, string bean or pumpkins on the dining tables. But there were the meat, fish, pancakes, pies, bread, porridge, mushrooms, caviar etc.

Winnie-the-Pooh. Russian version

The own screen version of adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh has been created in USSR practically simultaneously with Disney. Though it was totally illegal, nobody cared about it. The three films was done: WINNIE-THE-POOH (1969), WINNIE-THE-POOH GOES ON A VISIT (1971) and WINNIE-THE-POOH AND THE DAY OF CARES (1972). The shorts was directed by great Feodor Khitruk. Vladimir Zuikov and Eduard Nazarov acted as art directors.
Since the Soviet version is not so known abroad we thought that it will be nice to put online some shots. Probably you perfectly know this plot about how Pooh (for short) has got in desperate position. As you can see there was no Christopher Robin and character of Winnie-the-Pooh was a very serious. One may think that Pooh understand very well that he is not very smart but he tried to reconcile to it. Just look at how he preserves, cares and protect Piglet.

In the early ninetieth there was a plan to produce the animated feature based on very famous poem of Alexander Pushkin. Englishmen and Russian studio Christmas Films worked in common on RUSLAN & LUDMILA. Vyacheslav Kotenochkin was a director and Gennady Novozhilov (he worked on many Russian classic films including SNOW QUEEN) has acted as production designer. Let's return to PRINCE VLADIMIR for a while. Even before the storyboard process has taken the place, directors of PRINCE VLADIMIR were engaged in character development and research. Here you can see some very preliminary storyboard drawings done by Yuori Batanin the second director of PRINCE VLADIMIR. The character design has been essentially changed since then.

THE MOUNTAIN OF GEMS

Russia is the biggest country in the whole world. If you will decide to travel cross-country by train the tour will take not less than week! People of hundreds different nationalities live at enormous spaces of Russia. And they have many folk tales any of them is the real gem...
This saying became introduction to another ambitious Russian animated production [besides PRINCE VLADIMIR]. An idea to produce the series of cartoons with length of 13 minutes per episode has appeared a couple of years ago. The project was named THE MOUNTAIN OF GEMS (GORA SAMOTSVETOV).
It should not become an ordinary serial. Each episode devoted to one folk tale was done by separate team (or by independent animation studio) in most different technic of animation (as far as the budget allowed it). It was supposed to create 52 cartoons and about 20 are ready now. Part of them were shown on Russian television and released on DVD.
One film of THE MOUNTAIN OF GEMS was produced in St Petersburg by famous Russian animation director Konstantin Bronzit. Today he presented here the concept art and finished shots from his cartoon THE CAT AND THE FOX (KOT I LISA).

Since today we want to show some concept art done by Grigory Lozinsky for NEZNAIKA ON THE MOON, it is necessary to tell more in detail about the world of the book of Nikolai Nosov. Neznaika and his friends are some form of liliputians actually. One may call them Shorties. Therefore usual plants, fruit and vegetables are really big for them. But on the Inner Moon all is different. The Lunarians are shorties also but THEIR fruits and vegetables are quite correspond to them on the size. It can sound weird and strange but all is pretty logical and clearly in a context of the book.

In 1964 famous Soviet writer Nikolai Nosov has written the children's book NEZNAIKA ON THE MOON about new adventures of Neznaika who was extremely popular character in Soviet Union. One may translate his name as someone who usually “doesn’t know” (antipode of the know-it-all). And this book was about space travel of Neznaika and his adventures on the Moon where he has found out that the Moon is hollow and there is another planet with the atmosphere and inhabitants under the external surface. The piquancy was that society on this Inner Moon was a capitalistic. Thus it was a travel from fantastic world of communism to the world of markets and money. Nosov has described in details many things that Soviet children didn’t know at all. Think about the stock exchanges, shares, unemployment, commercial advertising, billionaires, strikebreakers and many other things. The book was a hilarious and very cinematic. Nevertheless there were not any attempts to make the screen version up to the middle of 90th years. By this time the life in Russia has changed dramatically and in conditions of new system of values it was decided to remove any political implied sense from proposed animated feature. Now the villains were bad not because they were exploiters, but because they didn’t care about ecology on their planet. It was a shame actually but this post is not about it. We want to show couple of concept drawings of bad guys. This is another work of Grigory Lozinsky.

And this drawing demand additional comment. It is the playful parody on the famous picture THE GIRL WITH PEACHES (1887) of Valentin Serov actually. We put here the parody and the original both.

As to animated feature. It has received ambiguous responses. It should be better.

It was not a rare thing that Soviet and Western animation studios have made the screen versions of the same book. The own versions of CINDERELLA, ALICE IN WONDERLAND, THUMBELINA and others was created in USSR. Usually it was the books which have become public domain. Sometimes (in case of WINNIE THE POOH for example) the cartoons were created to the detriment of owners of legitimate rights. And practically always Soviet artists used the most different approaches to a form of screen version. A vivid example is the Russian version of THE JUNGLE BOOK. It is not a short cartoon. It is an epic five parts animated film which was created within several years by Soyuzmultfilm animation studio. The first part was released in 1967 (whether it was a casual concurrence? Who knows?) and the last appeared in 1971. All five parts consistently narrates the story of becoming adult of Mowgli, the boy who lived with wolves. Unlike the Disney version the Soviet MOWGLI is quite true to the Rudyard Kipling's classic tale.

The same team that created THE BLUE PUPPY produced THE PRIMITIVE HISTORY cartoon one year earlier. This is very kind fairy tale about the young elephant who was born before times. It is interesting to note that THE PRIMITIVE HISTORY features one of the first uses of electronic music in Russia.

It is known that Disney inspired all world animation including Soviet of course. Some decades the Disney manner, technic and styles ruled in Soviet Union. But in sixtieth years all has changed. The variety of new styles and directions was created by talented Russian artists. Some were very interesting and original. Today I want to show one such example. There are stills from THE BLUE PUPPY (1976) cartoon. I'm not sure that this cartoon was released outside Russia. But who knows?

The Russian Insider will work in test mode for a while. This is new experience for us. But with what to begin? I think we'll start with the info about new upcoming Russian animated feature named "Prince Vladimir" (by the way there is an official site). This is the most ambitious and most scale Russian project in years. The imagined story based on the true events which occured one thousand years ago. The production has begun in the end of the ninetieth years and now it is almost finished at last. Here you can see the work of Andrei Riabovitchev who has acted as character designer for the film. This is a first portion. As you probably understand Andrei has done an enormous work therefore later we'll publish a lot of his pictures.
